NO MEAN FEAT
The sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary was a unique
historical event. It was a sacrifice far greater than that of any mortal,
including Abraham. Unlike Abraham who eventually got an animal substitute in
place of his son Isaac (Genesis 22:1-14), God didn’t provide a substitute for
Jesus, because there was no animal or human being that could take His place.
He was tempted and tried. He was mocked, despised,
and rejected by the same people He came to save from sin and divine judgment.
And more painfully, He was spat on, scourged, tortured, crowned with thorn and
ultimately crucified. He was subjected to such brutalities and inhuman
treatments all for the sake of saving humanity from eternal damnation (Isaiah
53:3-5). Acknowledging His suffering, Charles Spurgeon laments “My sins were the scourges which locerated
those blessed shoulders, and crowned with thorn those bleeding brows: my sins
cried ‘Crucify Him! Crucify Him!’ and laid the cross upon His gracious
shoulders.”
Imagine! The king of kings and Lord of lords, the
creator of the universe, the God-man,
the innocent One was tried and executed like a common criminal for an offence
He was incapable of committing, all because of your sins and those of the whole
world. For the very first time, His ever-present Father hid His face from Him
when He needed Him most, because He was carrying the load of your sins (Matthew
27:46; Isaiah 53:6).

From the foregoing, it is clear that Jesus paid a
stiff price to purchase redemption for you, though you got it free of charge.
He left His glory in heaven and allowed Himself to be crucified. What humiliation!
He was made to be sin, he who knew no sin. What degredation! He was gruesomely
tortured, He suffered excruciating pain and died agonizingly, for they nailed
His hands and feet to the Cross and pierced His body with a sword. What horror!
But in His death, He lowered down a lifeline that pulled you out of the ocean
os sin, rescuing you from God’s looming judgement. What a salvation! As it
were, the salvation or justification Jesus got for you was no mean feat. It was
purchased at a Great Price. Jesus
made a great sacrifice to obtain a Great Salvation for you. Before His
crucifixion, He prayed agonizingly at Gethsemane so that He would receive a
Great Grace to bear the Great Cross. The Bible describes His Gethsemane ordeal
thus: “And being in an agony he prayed
more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down
to the ground” (Luke 22:44).
Now, what should you do to have this Great
Salvation? Don’t trivalize Jesus’ Great Salvation but answer the Great Question
in Hebrews 2:3: “How shall we escape, if
we neglect so great salvation?” by a Great Repentance. Confess your Great
sins to God, plead for His Great Forgiveness, repent of those sins and accept
Jesus as your saviour and Lord. May the Great God give you grace not to say no
to this Great Salvation.
