The stories surrounding Malta’s capital are intimately linked to the island’s mythology and it all begins after laying the foundation of Valletta. In 1566, the Knights of St. John carved a decorative city right out of a barren, empty peninsula, however, don’t conceive that it’s just some relic of the past!

Behind the ominous fortifications, you’ll discover a lively city that still has several tales to share with delectable cuisine, a thriving nightlife scene and home to innovative architecture. A valid Malta passport is your ultimate gateway to enter Valletta and delve in the charm of the city. Here’re top reasons to visit the place;

1. Elaborative architecture
Entitled as UNESCO World Heritage for its pleasant collection of beautiful and elaborative architecture scene; Valletta imposes military forts with deep coats encircling its perimeter. You’ll also find some of the most elegant church domes and spires piercing the skyline, palazzos bearing rich embroidery work right next to towering townhouses and wooden balconies that are rich green.

While you wander the city streets, remember looking up and you’ll find the centuries-old tradition peering right at you from the balconies with a bustling street life beneath. Valletta’s baroque attractions include;

- The charming Auberge de Provence that’s now known as the National Museum of Archaeology
- The Grand Master’s Palace that was once home to directors of Knights of St. John
- Fort St. Elmo that has been recently restored and guarding the peninsula along with the National War Museum.

When there, you’ll get this ultimate chance of exploring the wonderful hospital at the Sacra Infermia and Knights and do visit the passive 16th century St. Paul’s Shipwreck church. Work to restore Valletta’s former glory is underway and it’s likely to complete before 2018.

2. St. John’s Co-Cathedral
The grim stone exterior may fool you but stepping inside the St. John’s Co-Cathedral is the real thing as you’ll feel like stepping in a shiny jewellery box. It was built by the Knights between 1573 and 1578; truly an exceptional masterpiece among the monuments around the world. Every inch and stone are neatly painted as if did with utmost care. Admire the murals by the Knight Mattia Preti and Calabrian artists, the heraldic symbols around the walls and marble patchwork of 375 Knights’ tombs is also worth noting.

3. Cutting-edge infrastructure
Although Valletta hides many historical treasures, it isn’t backwards and you can definitely accept the fact by the city’s radical infrastructure; especially around the City Gate. It’s the work of renowned architecture Renzo Piano whom we all know for the Shard in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the inspiring New York Times Tower.

4. A covert swimming spot
Explore the desolate shoreline away from the city’s hustle and bustle where whispers of military maritime past are to be found. The path is off beaten, taking you across the Mediterranean Conference Centre right next to the Malta Experience theatre. Peace and solitude can be experienced best here so perhaps a visit here once are must!

Conclusion
Let the above reasons be enough to get a Malta passport today and fly to Valletta for an unforgettable trip that’ll surely become your nostalgia.
