In the midst of all the controversies and Spain’s glory at the Euro
2016, David De Gea broke a 50-year-old record by keeping clean sheets in
his first 5 competitive matches with Spain.
The record was held by Gordon Banks who managed clean sheets for 442
minutes, which De Gea broke after managing a clean sheet in a 5th
consecutive match against Turkey. The Turks did not trouble the Spanish
defense much, as they stood firm. Spainish players were at their best
and it was a glimmer of hope for their fans after a disappointing 2014
World Cup.
The Manchester United shot stopper kept clean sheets in his first four
competitive matches against Luxembourg, Macedonia, Ukraine and Czech
Republic, the fifth came against the Turks.
In the match against Turkey, De Gea was rarely troubled except for the
early mistake by Sergio Ramos. The record will be a huge boost for De
Gea in a bid to regain his confidence after all the controversies he
faced. De Gea has become Del Bosque’s first choice ahead of Iker
Casillas, who held the goalkeeping reigns for Spain for a long time.
